Tomato Time

2022-11-05

3 minute read

I was pretty sick yesterday, not covid level but just a really sore chest and mild headache all day. It slowed me down a little. Despite this, I had a pretty good day:

Called my brother

I called my little brother for a quick chat, we talked about bouldering, writing, the pomodoro technique, and fantasy. It was an encouraging call, we think about and enjoy a lot of the same things. Regarding job hunting, we talked about setting aside some time in the morning to do applications, then I can have the rest of the day to do other things. This is something I've thought about before, and intended to do (but haven't actually done). He framed it well, "Just two pomodoro sets". The pomodoro method is a way of structuring focussed time that is made up of 25 minute stretches of focus, followed by 5 minutes of rest, and then another 25 minutes. You do three of these 25+5 slots and then you take a longer break. When I use it I get fairly good results, although I find it easy to miss the timer and go beyond 25min when I'm really focussing.

Regarding work

I used the pomodoro technique to focus on writing a cover letter for a job. I went over their projects in the 'case studies' section of their website, identified things about the company I liked and that aligned with my work experience, wrote up a letter and submitted an application. Honestly, my letter was a little corny and I don't like my chances of getting the role, but it's good to get the ball rolling. Today I'll pick out a few roles and do some research, but I don't want to actually do any applying seeing as it's a Saturday. (Although, maybe a monday morning application would get a recruiters attention?).

In the evening

I made a decent stock by boiling up a chicken carcass I had in the freezer with some cloves of garlic and a bayleaf, then I added

After, I sat with my laptop and tried to exit some of the > 50 tabs I had open across 4 windows. I like to treat this as an indulgence sometimes, like going down a rabbit hole. They're often articles I've opened, so when I've put the time aside I like to read through them properly.

More links,

Jean Baptiste Courtier
Cool photos, funny and clever. I like that they're all taken in an apartment that looks like my old one. Art is for everyone, not just people with fancy apartments and homes.

Death, the last visit by Marie Howe
Ridiculously horny but necessary, the way sex and death are in our minds so beyond our comprehension, so desperate for physical gratification. They exist as things that happen to and through the body, and talking or thinking about them will always fall short of what they are.

Returning the Sword to the Stone by Mark Leidner looks good, I'd like to get my hands on it. There's a distributor in the states who delivers to Australia, but the postage is more expensive than the book. I could do it, but it seems like a waste, I'll see if I can bundle it with some other things, maybe some gifts for people. I could only see one other thing in their catalogue I liked the look of though :-(
