yellow in reverse
3 minute read
I made mild progress climbing the yellow climb in reverse yesterday, and had fun starting to try the orange climb. Body feels tired today, will try to rest a bit.
not feeling it
Not feeling remarkably stimulated to write today. Yesterday I did a lot of weaving, I've now completed all the line work on weeping boy. Remaining is the black fill on each side of the hair, and then another couple of inches of straight weave. It doesn't look as good as I hoped. Ira Glass banging on the door of my heart with the classic paragraph (I'll put it at the bottom of this entry). Will sit for a couple of days before I buy a bigger loom, see if I'm still into it. Read 'On Weaving' first.
The Tale of the King Crab
A quiet and slow film, I enjoyed a lot about it but also found it a bit boring sometimes. It really felt like a medieval tale, everything from the characters to the plot. I think this was on purpose.
Paul Klee
The book of his notes is sitting on the shelf looking at me, I need to hook into it. I'm kind of hoping it might inspire my writing here a little, I'd like this journal to be more poetic and more articulate. I want to have ideas and describe them well here.
Brasil
I watched a video about Brazil yesterday, as part of my portuguese homework. I'm always amazed at how easy it is to learn new things. Why don't I do this more often? It wasn't the most gripping piece of film, and the style was a little dated, but I'm still impressed at the variety of information he fit into 40 minutes. A well paced and well rounded description of a country. He covers colonial settling, people groups, slavery, independence from Portugal, military coup, economic staples, exports, climate zones, inequality, population by city, other stuff. I think I'll listen today again, then get to work writing 3 paragraphs in portuguese about what I learnt or what I found interesting. Could be cool to watch other videos like this on NZ and Argentina.
Food food food
I'm going to cook another soup today, a chorizo and tomato one. It should be good, another Jaimie Oliver set. I still need to type up the first fish one.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” ― Ira Glass
