A list of things to talk to, quickly

2022-08-16

3 minute read

It's a late start today, for reasons I'll go into. But at the start, I want to outline the topics I'll cover in todays journal entry, as a way to help me structure the post and turn it around in a timely fashion

If that's not a list of Louis' interests then golly I don't know what is!

pushing the boulder up the hill

I finished the yellow climb on wall two at Burnley Bouldering wall. It didn't feel elegant, but that can come with practice. I got super pumped forearms, so was really scrambling at the end of it. In between I continued to read the latest Real Review. I've started setting a 5min timer between attempts, this helps me get more rest and better effort out of each try, and gives me a bit of time to read.

Enys Men

Went out to see Enys Men with Bre last night, I really enjoyed it. Shot on 90mm film, the colours are all quite saturated and the bleak lonely landscape is captivating. As usual good soundtrack and foley, and it's nice to watch something so slow. It was not a horror as I was used to them, the constant sense of unease however did firmly establish it as a horror film. It also inspired me for interior design, I really like the furniture and home set up the character has; Very rural and utilitarian, with that english and sailor charm to everything.

Sezchuan cuisine

Before hand we went out for dinner to a sezchuan place, I ate a huge bowl of spicy fish stew and now I'm being punished for it. Both the portions and the spice have done bad things to my body - I'm afflicted with diahrea, gut ache and I'm paying the spicy fun toll (it's price rhymes with it's name).

Couldn't sleep, lets learn

I woke up around 4:00 with more gut issues and couldn't get back to sleep, so I started on a codeacademy course on golang. I remember when go was first coming out and google sent people round the universitys to teach it to people. I'm learning it because it sounds cool, I like that it compiles into a single executable, and I want to learn something beyond javascript. It's got me back into the programming bug, I'm expecting to write a good wee list of things to start once I get out of bed, not the least of which being to put this journal online.

The lopsided cry

I'm very close to finishing my big weaving project, and it's been invigorating. I enjoy it, something about slowly rendering things like this is very charming. For cartoons it feels like a good medium. Commiting something to simple to something so labour intensive is funny, and the final product is really self contained and objet-d'arte-esque. It's something I've always struggled with, I find my ideas aloof without a hard deliverable to pin them to. Most of creative projects around (and outside of) cartoons over the last couple of years have been about finding those targets and understanding the place of cartooning in my soul and practice. I think I will indeed bite the bullet and buy a loom, I found one that looks good on Etsy for just over $100.

100 times returning

I've been putting off publishing a return.horse comic because this will be the 100th post to instagram. Feels funny, but I'm realising writing this that treating it as too special is stopping me from getting it done and out there. Keep on leaving each morning, keep on coming back in the evening.
